What genres apply to this group?

The idea of Nowheresville is to be a paranormal absurdist comedy with surreal horror theming. Flexible in terms of lighthearted silliness while still having room for poignant character writing. A slice-of-life sandbox rp with a opt-in plot elements.Primary influences include: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Napoleon Dynamite, David Lynch’s filmography (Twin Peaks), Gravity Falls, Jordan Peele’s Filmography (Us, Nope), Welcome to Nightvale, In The Mouth of Madness (1994), Hausu (1977)

There will be no explicit NSFW in the server itself nor will there be designated channels for NSFW. While there is no hard and fast (lol) rule about how far one can go in your threads, we please ask that you use your better judgement when writing build-up to such scenes. Stop, fade to black, or move to DMs or any other private server please! As for NSFW content in the joking, silly goofs kind of way, this is allowed, but again, within reason. Please be respectful to everyone’s comfort levels when it comes to this as well!

How will server conflict be handled?

Server conflict will function on a case-by-case basis, entirely dependent on the circumstances and severity of the issue. We will first advise you on the steps to resolve the conflict. For example, privately conversing with the other party before intervening but will immediately intervene if the nature of the issue is serious.

Can we have personal NPCs?

Yes, Personal NPCs are allowed in the group (Ie: A younger sibling to your PC or a pet) however, these personal NPCs are NOT meant to be secondary PCs and are supporting cast members to your PCs story.

Do all RPs have to take place in server?

You are free to RP privately within your dms, a separate server, or group chat, but if you'd like it to count towards group currency and have an impact on the narrative, it has to be properly submitted and logged for clarity purposes.

How integrated into the setting are characters allowed to be?

We encourage applicants to involve their character as much into the lore and setting of the group as they’d like! We want to be collaborative and flexible when it comes to the player characters and their individual backstories, so we will be taking a ‘yes, and’ approach to applications and will work with you to fill in the details befitting a local, transient, or newcomer.

What type of characters is the group looking for?

The themes of the group itself are meant to cultivate a surreal, comical, and eclectic cast, with wiggle room for more serious narrative tones and poignant moments.Characters with big personalities, creative concepts, and complex histories from all walks of life as well as characters grounded in reality who would find themselves off kilter yet adaptable within Voynich would shine the most in NWV.

  • don't be afraid to give us super exaggerated traits! don't be so extra that you'll never be able to take the group seriously, but don't be so normal that you're just an average joe!

  • get creative! find hobbies, traits, and jobs that really stand out even in real life!

  • don't be afraid to involve your character in the world! the town of voynich is your oyster, so feel free to integrate what you've studied of the group into your app!

— character creation.

our new neighbor!

Nowheresville welcomes the fun, the wacky, and the extravagant! When looking for player characters who fit the unfitting town of Voynich, we try to highlight characters who stand out from the crowd: those with exaggerated personalities, with bits that go on for just long enough to be absurd, and diverse individuals who bring something new to the table.Crafting your character for this group is meant to be a fun process; there are stories to uncover and secrets to be told throughout the course of the plot, and thus character creation also comes with a few mechanics which serve to aid in your journey across Voynich. These mechanics come in the form of special boons created for various origins, as well as stats.

origins.

all manners of people in this beautiful world of ours!

The social groups of Voynich are separated by three points of familiarity with the town: Locals, Transients, and Newcomers. Player characters will belong to one of these three factions, influencing minor plot- and mechanics-related elements, such as NPC relationships, IC knowledge of the setting, and stats.

Local info.
Knowledge.High/I live here.
BoonIf you are playing as a Local, your character will be able to obtain one of the following boons:

✽ One With Us: No matter what your reputation is, residents of the town are more likely to trust you because you're one of them. When interacting with NPCs who are also Locals, their trust will slightly lower the DC of any rolls you make during the conversation.OR✽ Sixth Sense: Even though you're used to the oddities that happen around town, you're a bit more intuitive when it comes to matters of the unknown. Once per thread, you are able to add a Proficiency Die to a Sensituicanniness roll.

— Locals.

"been here all my life"

Neighbours in need of a helping hand know your number by heart. Shopkeepers shave a dollar off your total with a wink and a smile—"Family discount. And tell your folks I said hi". Schoolchildren wave to you as their teachers look on, proud to have educated such a positive influence.Or maybe it's the opposite: teenage boys elbow their friends, murmuring words such as "bad vibes" and "rumour has it…" when you pass by. The diner owner closes the blinds to her rustic establishment, a sign flipped to respond to your arrival with an imposing CLOSED in looping, bolded font. The local police station practically knows your name backwards and forwards at this point—"Makes the paperwork less of a hassle, am I right?"For better or for worse (or perhaps most stark: not at all), the people of Voynich know you. You are one of the locals in this city-town, someone familiar with its sights, sounds … and its peculiarities. The oddities of the winding roads and sighing quiet of its neighbourhoods; the eccentricities do not bother you—they are as part of your everyday life as a coffee from the twenty-six-year-old cafe that knows no definition to the word "gentrification".

  • Player characters who are Locals will have lived in Voynich for most of, if not all of, their lives. They will be accustomed to the peculiarities of the region, and have decent rapport with NPCs of a similar origin. It's so lovely here—it makes perfect sense you'd never leave.

#forgetmenot.

— Transients.

"The comings and goings-on"

Like a ghost, you phase in and out from the city's borders. Be it for business, pleasure, or a secret third thing (combat…?), you may not have origins in Voynich, but you always find yourself coming back. Perhaps a select few Locals know you fondly; you may have a friend in the area, or you might be the one making weekly deliveries to the grocery store. Conversely, you could have a contentious reputation amongst the people—did you break up with someone you used to see in Voynich (yikes!)? Or are you political pals with the Mayor (YIKES!!!)?Transients are those who are familiar, but not too familiar with those in Voynich. You may get a nod of recognition from those you rub elbows with consistently, or you might even have family in town that you visit every summer. Perhaps you studied at the art school before it was mushed into the combination Funerary-Art College.Regardless of your relationship to the town and its nature, you're in the middle when it comes to all that Voynich has to offer. You may not be so intimate with the meandering nature trails and the sprawling forest, but you're also not so unrecognizable that Voynich sees you as a stranger. The town greets you "hello". Do you greet it back?

  • Player characters who are Transients will have visited Voynich more than once in their life. Whether it be because they're a local who moved out, have relations in the neighbourhood whom they visit, or are regularly there for business, they will be at least somewhat accustomed to its people, even if some of what the town has to offer is … bizarre, to say the least.

#daisy.

Transient info.
Knowledge.moderate/vaguely aware.
Boon.If you are playing as a Transient, your character will be able to obtain one of the following boons:

✽ Chameleon Camouflage: Your experience hopping in and out of town reflects your adaptability to any situation. You gain a permanent +1 stat boost to any one of the three stats (Social Etiquette, Physicality, or Sensintuicanniness)OR✽ BFFLALWIV (Best Friends for Life At Least While in Voynich): You may not be a Local, but you do have some friends from your time spent here. Choose one NPC; any conversation with this character will significantly decrease the DC for any related rolls you have to make when speaking with them.

Newcomer info.
Knowledge.Minimal/nonexistent.
Boon.If you are playing as a Newcomer, your character will be able to obtain one of the following boons:

✽ Five-Leaf Clover: Even though you're fresh-faced in Voynich, you've got a borderline-supernatural luck about you. Once per thread, you can automatically turn any failure into a success (...or vice versa, if you so wish).OR✽ Cheshire Curiosity: The true and tired tricks of the Locals don't faze you: being new here, you can spot suspicious goings-on when you see them. Three times per thread, you can choose to reroll any roll you've made when uncovering the secrets of Voynich.

— Newcomers.

"Fresh off exit 27"

Come on in—don't be shy, sweetheart! The diner owner calls you sugar the same way she makes her tea extra sweet. The grocery store clerk asks you how you're doing while bagging your instant noodles. The motel owner gives you the key to the fancy suite—you know, the one with the least amount of mold in it. Voynich already likes you. In fact, Voynich might even love you. Won't you do it a favour and love it too? This town is entirely foreign to you. You've probably never heard of it in your life; there aren't even true crime podcasts about it because nothing happens there. You think that maybe you heard about it from a friend of a cousin who was told this by her doctor's receptionist—but then you remember that you're confusing Voynich with a made-up town in a book that was part of your grade five English curriculum's mandatory reading list, and you immediately forget that this place even existed. … Until you find yourself in it.Did you make a wrong turn along the interstate? Did one of the shoddy signs actually do its job in advertising the town to you, luring you in with its promise of FAMILY-OWNED RESTAURAN[The rest has been degraded due to neglect, but you think you see the Cracker Barrel logo] and [2 Peter 2:18]OUS BREAKFAST? Maybe it was your intent to visit this town for the first time (...why?) … or perhaps you're moving in this week (...Why). Either way, you're now held lovingly in the jaws of Voynich, eager to take it in for all that it is, whimsicality and all.

  • Player characters who are Newcomers are … well, new to town! They've never visited in their lives, and may not have even heard of the place until now. Be it truckers stranded at the rest stop, cross-country roadtrippers taking a detour, or maybe they’ve just finished unloading the moving truck at their new forever home.

application instructions & mechanics explanations.

— mechanics.

A narrative dice system.

— overview.

an introduction.

Instead of a classic d20 system, moderated roleplays and events will require a simplified usage of the Genesys Dice System. Unlike a numbers-based outcome, Genesys instead calculates narratively; namely, it will look at the outcome of your action, and its consequences.

—dice.

Nowheresville uses four narrative dice: an ability die, proficiency dice, a difficulty die, and challenge dice. The purpose of the dice are as follows:

DICEDESCRIPTIONEXAMPLE
AbilityThe action being taken. This is an immutable value; there will only ever be one Ability Die in every pool.a character deciding to climb a wall.
ProficiencyAny advantages, bonuses, or stat boons which grant the action an increased likelihood of succeeding. This value is adjustable, and will go up or down depending on various IC factors. Having points in the stat associated with the task grants +1 Proficiency Die per point.the character climbing the wall has a +1 in Physicality, or they have another player character who is helping them out by giving them a boost.
DifficultyThe inherent difficulty of the task at hand. This is an immutable value; there will only ever be one Difficulty Die in every pool.the wall being climbed, which has no special features or attributes.
ChallengeAny disadvantages or external factors which decrease the likelihood of the action succeeding. This value is adjustable, and will go up or down depending on various IC factors. Having negative points in the stat associated with the task grants +1 Challenge Die per point.the wall being climbed on is surrounded by thorny vines, making it more of a risk to safely climb, or there is currently a thunderstorm happening, which makes the wall slippery.

Each narrative die also contains a variety of symbols. These symbols serve to flavour the outcome you receive. It's boring to just roll a 15 and immediately get what you sought out, after all! With the Genesys system, players are rewarded even if they fail a task, or pay the toll of succeeding a task outside of their scope.

The symbols dictate the following consequences:

SUCCESS.             A success is nullifies a failure.
If the number of successes out number the failures, the check is passed.

ADVANTAGE.          An advantage nullifies a threat.
If the number of advantages outmatch the number of threats, a minor benefit comes as a result of the attempted action.

TRIUMPH.          A triumph nullifies a failure, and cannot be nullified by any other symbols.
But inversely, a triumph cannot nullify a despair either.
A Triumph will grant the check a major boon, regardless of outcome.

FAILURE.          A failure nullifies a success.
If the number of failures outnumber the successes, the check is not passed.

THREAT.          A threat nullifies an advantage
If the number of threats outmatch the number of advantages, a negative side effect comes as a result of the attempted action.

DESPAIR.          A despair nullifies a success and cannot be nullified by any other symbols.
But inversely, a despair cannot nullify a triumph either.
A despair will grant the check a major bane, regardless of outcome.

— reputation.

Hidden to players and managed by the mods, participants of Nowheresville will grapple with the most terrifying element of American society: relationship issues. The goal of this mechanic is to have players feel like Voynich is truly a close-knit town with its fair share of complicated relationships and dynamics. So have making friends (...or enemies) with the colourful cast!Reputation garnered through repeated interactions with official group NPCs will impact the way these NPCs regard you; do they see you as trustworthy? A threat? Are they willing to share secrets with you? Or will they turn and walk away when they see you approaching them on the street? Reputation will affect not only interpersonal relationships during day-to-day interactions, but during pivotal events, as well.

Not every cultivated relationship is a net positive, however. Befriending one NPC may gain you the ire of another. Making friends with your neighbour might allow you further insight to the storeowner down the street. Perhaps you'll enjoy pissing off the Mayor, much to the chagrin of his employees. Each player character's Reputation with an NPC may affect them in ways you did not realize. Only through risking it all in the game of social interaction and small-town politics will you find the answers you seek.

— stats.

Nowheresville operates using four (4) different stats, with one of them being custom-made. The stats are as follows:

physicality.

for physical feats

This stat indicates your character's physical prowess. This is not just brute strength, but can also encompass things such as dexterity and constitution. A higher Physicality stat means that your character is more durable, strong, and/or physically flexible.

social etiquette.

for social feats

This stat indicates your character's grasp on social skills. This includes the ability to lie (deception), their charisma, and/or their ability to perform. A higher Social Etiquette stat means that your character is able to navigate complex social situations with ease.

sensituicanniness.

sensitivity, intuition, uncanniness

Sensituicanniness is … sensitivity! Intuition! Uncanninness! It is the ability to perceive the unperceived—in layman's terms: your sixth sense. A higher Sensituicanniness stat means that your character is more tuned into the laden, subtle elements of their surroundings.

custom stat.

time to get silly

The Custom Stat you build for your character will be a glimpse into their personality, lending into the absurdist nature of the group. You may assign a value as low as -5 to this stat upon creation, or as high as +5—the catch being that it must be something ultra-specific, ultra-niche, and ultra-ridiculous.Examples of acceptable Custom Stats would be:

  • Ability to Juggle Exactly 3 Objects but No More or Less: +5

  • Flirtation Skills When Hitting on Cute Girls: -5

  • Finding Crop Tops in the Thrift Shop Value Bin: +3

dice pool.

how stats are allotted

Every positive point in a stat influences the amount of Proficiency Dice in your dice pool (e.g., a +2 in Physicality will grant you the ability to roll 2 Proficiency Dice alongside the other dice needed for an ability check). Inversely, every negative point in a stat influences the amount of Challenge Dice in your pool (e.g., a -2 in Physicality will force you to roll 2 Challenge Dice alongside others needed for an ability check).During creation, players have three blocks they can use for their character stats.

Block 1Block 2:Block 3:
0,     0,     1-1,     1,     1-1,     0,     2

These blocks may be allotted to any combination of the three main stats (Physicality, Social Etiquette, and Sensituicanniness). The total sum of your stats should be 1 when first creating your character. Please see the guidelines for what sort of stat blocks would be acceptable, and which would not be:

ACCEPTABLE:

PhysicalitySocial EtiquetteSensituicanniness(CUSTOM)
100x
PhysicalitySocial EtiquetteSensituicanniness(CUSTOM)
-111x
PhysicalitySocial EtiquetteSensituicanniness(CUSTOM)
02-1x

UNACCEPTABLE:

Why: No stat has -1 as its value, therefore the sum of your stat block is 2.

PhysicalitySocial EtiquetteSensituicanniness(CUSTOM)

Why: -2 is not an applicable value from any of the three blocks provided. The sum of the stat block is also -1, instead of 1.

— VOYNICH.

the beginning of the story.

it's a swell little town! almost a city, but not quite. Just needs a few more people...

It’s off exit 27.Blink and you’ll miss it.Voynich is a small-medium city-town located in southern anystate, USA. The east coast at its vaguest and muggiest point—where swamps start to lap at your shins, and sweet tea is served by default. Nobody knows where Voynich is. It exists only in anecdotal evidence: a town you pass on a roadtrip, gimmicks lining unnoticeable billboards on the interstate, your cousin attending college there has not much to say about it, whispers of how "it must be far away because I’ve never heard of it"... An existence only even partially acknowledged by the less than 9,182 residents. Its charm relies on novelty. Its ‘retro’ aesthetics are a rebrand for not having the funds to remodel.

The ‘bigfoot-UFO flap’ of the late 80s has been single-handedly supporting Voynich's tourism bureau for decades. A location that’s ‘scenic’ despite being too south of the Appalachia to matter, but just cheap enough to pretend. Complete with a refurbished historic downtown, a state fair that lasts all month, and side-of-the-highway landmarks that were built in a day, Voynich is a drifter’s paradise wedged between multiple major cities—all of which have more to offer in one square block than the entirety of this idle town. But the nondescript and economically desperate college town serves its function: a truck stop for freaks, rest areas for runaways, and a neutral zone for criminals this side of the Mississippi. There isn’t anything here, and that’s the point. "Nowheresville", as it’s known by its local population, is a "weird" town built upon "weird" circumstances. A hub for dubious business practices, soul-searching spiritualists, art-school burnouts, the criminally enterprising, liminal explorers, cult defectors, concert roadies, supernatural vloggers, tourists, and the trappers who love them. A place not fully affixed to anyone’s memories. A place with a landscape just as hazy and nonsensical as your post-visit recollection of it. Great for the people who've disappeared, the riff-raff who want to disappear, and everything in between.

— Premise.

The narrative thrust

  • So you’ve come to the conclusion, or the blinding realization, you can’t leave. Not from something silly like a big dome over the city or an invisible forcefield. Life events have kept you here. Circumstances out of your control, missing the bus for the 7th time, alarms not going off, every uber ride cancels last minute. It’s one coincidence after the other and… it’s starting to get weird.

Your character is in Voynich now, whether they like it or not. For whatever reason they may have been in Voynich in the first place, they have now found they cannot leave Voynich. Trips on the highway stretch on for an unfathomable amount of miles with no discerning scenery and as soon as you turn back you’re right back at exit 27. Taking the backways may lead to sudden catastrophic car failure. Your wifi cuts out just as you’re about to book a flight. Your grandparents keep extending your visit to help around the house because it’s suddenly, just now, decided to fall apart. There’s any number of reasons why a departing trip or even just trying to run an outside the city errand may be delayed. But once that delay lasts days? Even weeks? It starts to get suspicious.Bad luck and coincidence can only go so far, and the displaced populous are not happy about the inconveniences that have stranded them.

But Voynich is nothing if not a noble and just community, so the monthly Town Hall Meeting has been rescheduled to hold proceedings immediately to address the growing concerns....

because you buried it once, now you're digging it up & going down with the sun.

We are utilizing NPCs as a way to enrich the world itself and flesh out the city of Voynich! no one's gonna save you. come the full moon, who's coming to the rescue?

in - universe information, premise, setting, NPCs and locations.

— map of voynich.

a mere summary of location information

— historic downtown voynich.

Home to Mullohand School of Fine and Funeral Arts and the Bad Hilton, the historic downtown Voynich is the hip and happening place for any visiting family or for a local date night! After having used an unscrupulous amount of tax dollars to pay for a garish sports stadium for their nonexistent sports teams years ago, natives of Voynich can at least feel some semblance of pride over the small businesses that have taken a foothold in the community.📌 THE BAD HILTON     Slated for demolition, the ‘Bad Hilton’ is the colloquial term for Hilton Suites Hotel in the historic downtown area of Voynich. Was it even a Hilton? Whatever it was and was not; it’s bad. It was bad. And now it’s bad again!  A new life is about to be blown up its decrepit foundation because that’s where you lot are staying!SPOTS OF INTERESTS:
📍 Town Hall
📍 Local TV & Radio Station
📍 Public Library
📍 Honeysuckle Diner
📍 'Nowhere Square'
📍 Mullohand School of Fine and Funeral Arts

— exit 27.

Exits off the highway are usually littered with expanses of shopping centers, convenience stores gas stations, and fast food eateries. Exit 27 is the same but just… less. The choice of buildings on this strip of road was questionable, as nearly every single facility is shaped like something. Wendy's is a wizard now.SPOTS OF INTERESTS:
📍 Cronenberg Campgrounds
📍 Every fast food chain of the south east. All of which have some sort of cosmetic gimmick. Ie the Wendy’s is a wizard and the Papa John’s is a horse.
📍 Multiple Gas Stations
📍 Miles long stretch of roadside attractions and tacky tourist traps.
📍 Truck/rest stop

— regular downtown voynich.

Not technically part of ‘Nowheresville’, but a joint custody battle between Voynich and the town next door. Their metropolitan area is as good as ours, as the gerrymandering had completely fucked up county borders.SPOTS OF INTERESTS:
📍 Silvertongue Night Club
📍 Goldmember Bar and Lounge
📍 HBFS (harder, better, faster, stronger) Makers Space
📍 Kids science museum
📍 Voynich Convention Center
📍 The Good Hilton

— crossditch public park.

The magnum opus of a public park. A vast expanse of multiple acres, many of which are untraversed and untrekked. Although much of the parkland has been left untouched by the slow-going industrialization due to funding cuts, a significant portion of the park itself is beautiful.SPOTS OF INTERESTS:
📍Skatepark & Underground Bunkers
📍 Festival Grounds
📍 Schoolbus Graveyard
📍 Food Truck Paradise
📍 Rec Center that sits ominously on the hill
📍 LARPing Grounds

— suburbia.

The suburbs is the largest populated part of Voynich. It is much more spread out and boasts many cookie-cutter neighborhoods right at the edge of what is the city's farmland and agricultural features.SPOTS OF INTERESTS:
📍 Carnation Row gated community
📍 Nowheresville Public Schools (Houndstooth Elementary School, Tattersall Middle School, Gingham High School)
📍 Peachtree Plaza
📍 Consequences Mall
